Our RYT® 200 Instructors

Yoga teacher training is a deep dive into the practice of yoga and a personal journey. Therefore, it is vital that you find a program that feels just right for you. Let’s meet the experts who will guide you through Barefoot’s curriculum.

Brianna

Brianna De Spain, E-RYT® 500, RYT® 500, YACEP®  | Lead Instructor

Bio:

Brianna_Arndt - RYT® 200 Lead Teacher

“Yoga is like ice cream. Everybody loves it, you just have to find your flavor.” Since age five, Brianna has nurtured a passion for healing, exercise, and nutrition. She met her need to heal first by becoming a certified medical massage therapist and a certified Yoga instructor. Since then, Bri has gone one to become a Board-certified Holistic Health Practitioner and has her Health Coaching Certification.

Equipped with a Bachelor’s degree in Holistic Health Sciences, decades of self-study, thousands of hours of certified training, specialized study in therapeutic-inspired Yoga, and palpatory therapy, Brianna founded Barefoot Studio in 2011. Shortly after, in 2013, she created the Barefoot Studio Yoga School. The School offers both a 200- and 300-hour program. Believing that “joy isn’t real joy unless it is shared,” Brianna imparts her knowledge, sharing her philosophy of achieving physical freedom and quieting the mind through the self-empowering practice of Yoga. From Hatha to Yin, and Power Flow to Yoga Nidra practice, Brianna revels in the daily opportunity to guide students through the exploration of their capabilities and needs!

Facilitating:

Anatomy and Physiology –

The backbone of the physical practice of yoga starts right here. How does your body move? What creates those moves? Allows the movement? What are the ways we can utilize our bodies to create precision, balance, fluidity, depth, and connection?

Asana/Pose breakdown, Props, Modification, and Adjustments –

In this portion, we will be looking at the full analysis of a pose and what that means for your body. In addition, you will receive adjustments in each pose so that you can feel what it means to indeed be in that posture. As we go through each pose, we will be looking at how to modify and adjust that pose to adapt it to an individual’s capabilities and the style class you may be teaching. Importantly, you will learn and practice multiple physical adjustments for each pose. During the breakdown, we also discuss verbiage to help you find your voice and how you feel most comfortable communicating.

Gentle, Hatha, Yin, Vinyasa/Flow, Chair, and Wall work –

While breaking down poses, we go through how to adapt them into the various styles that are most common in standard classes. Not only is this important as a teacher, but also amazingly useful as a practitioner looking to deepen their practice. The more you understand your body, the more you will discover what it truly needs on any given day. With this knowledge, you can adjust and adapt any practice to suit YOUR needs on that day. As an instructor, it gives you a larger toolbag to pull from as you become more finely tuned at reading your students’ bodies.

Yoga Philosophy –

The main philosophy of yoga is simple, yet not simple at all: mind, body, and spirit are all one and cannot be clearly separated. Not only with Brianna, but also with Melissa Hall-Cohn and Tanja Bungardt-Price, you will look at this philosophy from different vantage points. As a result, you will be able to correlate the what resonates with you to your practice and your teaching.

Meditation techniques-

Here, we dive into the different variations of meditation commonly practiced. During this time, we will also practice these different varieties, searching for the ones you connect with best.

Practice Teaching –

The best way to learn is to do! We will take turns teaching each other to build our skill!

Melissa

Melissa Hall-Cohn, E-RYT® 500, RYT® 500, YACEP®  |  Yoga Philosophy and Yin Instructor

Bio:

Melissa_Hall-Cohn - RYT® 200 Instructor

A former VP, figure skater, and race car driver, Melissa was introduced to yoga in 2012 as a way to manage stress and regain flexibility. Yoga delivered! When she decided to share her love of the practice with others, she focused on modification-forward asana, pranayama, and guided meditation. After concentrating on yoga philosophy and yin yoga in her 300-hour training, she knew she had more to share!

Since becoming a YACEP®, Melissa enthusiastically introduces learners to Yoga Philosophy Fundamentals and The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Most importantly, she honors the history while offering a modern, western world perspective. As a result, her students apply many of the philosophical lessons to their everyday lives. Her approach to Yin Yoga, grounded in the teachings of Bernie Clark and his teacher Paul Grilley, honors each person’s unique anatomical structure and range of motion.

When not practicing or teaching yoga, Melissa most likely is outside absorbing nature or hanging out with her family.

Facilitating:

Yoga Philosophy, Lifestyle, and Ethics –

We will explore the historical context of The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and then spend extra time with the yamas and niyamas that comprise the ethics of Yoga. Then, we will discuss yoga ethics from a modern, personal and professional point of view.

Yin–

We separate Yin because it is so much more than just a modification of a pose. In short, it has a completely different philosophy and application. With this in mind, Melissa takes her time to bring this knowledge to you. Without a doubt, this practice has made a significant addition to the yoga world. We are happy to share it with you.

Tanja

Tanja Bungardt-Price, E-RYT® 200, YACEP®  |  Ayurveda and Pranayama Instructor

Bio:

Tanja_Bungardt-Price - RYT® 200 Ayurveda Teacher

When Tanja was seven years old, her mother, who had been struggling with mental illness, committed suicide. Thus, Tanja always has been keenly aware of the challenges that people dealing with anxiety, stress, depression, and mental illness face, as well as the limits of western medicine in addressing these problems. Looking for alternative solutions, she started out with yoga, eventually becoming a yoga teacher. While traveling to India to study Ashtanga yoga in Mysore, she took advantage of the opportunity to visit multiple Ayurvedic clinics and practitioners to learn more about this ancient, holistic Indian medical system.

Tanja attended the Kanyakumari Ayurveda and Yoga Wellness Center to become an Ayurvedic Health Counselor, Ayurvedic Practitioner, and Panchakarma Technician. Significantly, her clients are an integral part of her journey along the path of Ayurveda and yoga—sharing her skills and knowledge with others is the natural fulfillment of that path. Teaching and educating people about Yoga and Ayurveda through lectures, workshops and classes is her calling along with seeing clients in her practice that she shares with her husband Bill Price, who is a Panchakarma Therapist, right here in Tucson.

Tanja Bungardt-Price is an E-RYT® 200, YACEP®, NAMA Board Certified Ayurvedic Practitioner, Certified Ayurvedic Health Counselor, Panchakarma bodyworker (Abhyanga, Svedana, Shirodara), Educator (CEU provider), Professional member of NAMA, Board member of CAC (The Council of Ayurvedic Credentialing), Ayurveda lecturer at University of Arizona Integrative program (IMER), founding member of Ayurveda Professionals of Arizona (APAA), Faculty member (Ayurveda studies at Yoga Teacher Trainings)

Facilitating:

Ayurveda –

In Sanskrit, Ayurveda means “The Science of Life.” From its roots, this practice is deeply intertwined with Yoga. Ayurveda places great emphasis on preventative care and encourages maintaining health through a balance in one’s life, right thinking, diet, lifestyle and use of herbs.

Pranayama (breathwork) –

Techniques in breathwork will forever change your practice and your teaching. If asanas are the bricks, pranayama is the mortar. You will learn how varieties of breath control effect mind, body, and spirit. Then practice, to embody the knowledge.

Yvonne

Yvonne Lundgren, E-RYT® 500, RYT® 500, YACEP®  |  Yoga Nidra Guide

Bio:

Yvonne_Lundgren - RYT® 200 Yoga Nidra GuideYvonne began her yoga journey sporadically at a gym, where it challenged her body but hadn’t connected the way it does today. Then, an invitation to join a meditation workshop at Barefoot came in, and the space and vibe intrigued her. Afterwards, Yvonne was hooked. It felt like home; a space where she was accepted, supported, embraced.

Yvonne lives with a number of ailments that at times can leave her bedridden. Without a doubt, learning to connect breath to body truly began to improve her practice and overall quality of life. The difference she felt from yoga was incredible. But, why did it work?

When Yvonne took the 200-hour teacher training at Barefoot in 2015, she did not intend to teach. However, as the training came to completion, she knew she wanted to share the bliss that can be attained through yoga.

“I have now been teaching for over 5 years and am grateful for every minute.”

Facilitating:

Yoga Nidra –

Some call this Yogic Sleep. Yvonne will guide you through 6 sessions throughout your training, an introduction to the science behind this method, and practical application.

Amanda

Amanda Coronado, RYT® 200  |  Sequencing, Transition Guide

Bio:

Amanda_Coronado - RYT® 200 Transition GuideAmanda began practicing yoga shortly after moving to Arizona in 2009. Over several years of casual practice, she became increasingly curious about the balance between strength, flexibility, and body mechanics in the yoga asanas. This desire to learn led her to enroll in the 2017 Barefoot Studio Summer Intensive. Upon completing the program, she began her teaching journey as part of the Barefoot staff. Amanda is known for her challenging power flows and her creative sequencing/transitions.

“Focus on the journey, not the destination.”

Facilitating:

What Our RYT® 200 Graduates Say

“I received much more from my 200 hour training at Barefoot Studio than I ever imagined. I have practiced yoga for over 15 years and wanted to enhance my knowledge and elevate my practice. This training truly exceeded all my expectations. I appreciated the focus on anatomy, the emphasis on how different everyone’s bodies are, and how to work within your own body’s limitations using supports and props. The encouragement of the educators and students at Barefoot elevated my confidence so much so that I want to continue my trainings and share what I’ve learned by teaching others. I highly recommend Barefoot Studio Yoga School!”

Mika2022

“All potential yoga teachers or those seeking a deeper experience into authentic yoga practice will be at home taking the Barefoot Studio Yoga School RYT 200 teacher training. After many years of teaching yoga and owning a yoga studio, I received everything I needed to reconnect my heart back to why we do yoga, the history and philosophy of the practice, how to determine the best yoga style for you where you are, the importance of the breath and body connection, progression poses to safely be able to do the focus pose and the importance of sangha. As importantly, Brianna and her teachers gave a welcoming space to all no matter yoga experience level, age, size, or gender. I highly recommend the Barefoot Studio Yoga School for all.”

Darlene2022

“I have been practicing yoga for sometime, mostly hot yoga. When I began my search for a Yoga Teacher Training program, I was looking for a mostly in person program that allowed me to continue working. I was also seeking a program with a rigorous focus on pose modifications for various pathologies. Brianna is able to teach all the physiology and pose/modification information in a concise manner that enables the student to maximize his/her teaching for all bodies. Lastly, there is an amazing environment of welcoming and support provided by all of the teaching staff Brianna has spent her career gathering together. I cannot emphasize enough how amazing the yoga journey is at Barefoot Studio Yoga School and how it will change your life just working the process during your training.”

Michael2022

Perri2020

“Our class at Barefoot Yoga School quickly became a tight knit group. We supported each other physically, mentally, and emotionally throughout our intensive 200 hours. Each of our teachers taught to their strengths, allowing us each to learn and grow into our own strengths as yoga teachers. I found the curriculum to be rigorous and well laid out. The entire Barefoot community of teachers and clients was extremely welcoming and supportive throughout the training. I can’t wait to continue my education with this group of educators!”
